Outdoor Trip Leader Job Description

Definition and Purpose:

The Outdoor Trips Leader reports to the Director of ROEA. Serving as part of an Outdoor Leadership Team consisting of various (6-9) individuals, the group is responsible for developing and leading comprehensive outdoor programs for ROEA; such as rock-climbing & rappelling, kayaking, canoeing, biking and hiking. The Outdoor Trips Leader is responsible for pre and post logistics, equipment and trip preparation, leading trips and administrative functions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and possess maturity, good judgment and leadership ability to lead our campers on trips
  • Assist in the planning and development of trips/clinics/classes
  • Lead and guide half-day, day, weekend and extended trips, events, clinics and classes as needed
  • Conduct pre-trip/event meetings with participants
  • Assist in promoting and advertising all Outdoor Recreation and ROEA events
  • Maintain, clean and organize equipment
  • Provide positive public relations, program promotion and policy education
  • Assist and perform pre and post trip logistics and administrative tasks
  • Scout, inspect and prepare trip locations/sites and necessary equipment
  • Maintain files on each event/trip/clinic
  • Respond to and follow all risk management/emergency procedures
  • Submit Incident/Injury report forms with appropriate documentation in timely manner
  • Adhere to all ROEA policies and procedures during all trips/clinics/classes
  • Stay current on outdoor trends and practices
  • Attend all regularly scheduled meetings
  • Complete and submit End-of-the-Week reports in a timely manner
  • Provide a friendly, upbeat and customer service oriented environment at all times
  • ROEA requires that all staff members are vaccinated for MMR, Td/Tdap, Varicella, Meningococcal, COVID-19 and Hepatitis B
  • Must posses a valid Driver License without serious infractions
  • Must be able to pass a background check

Preferred Work and Extra Curricular Experience:

  • Previous outdoor leadership experience
  • Background in leading trips/clinics/classes is desirable
  • Knowledge of specific outdoor programs offered by ROEA
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management
  • Experience working with clients from various backgrounds
  • Ability to provide positive roll model
  • Awareness of, and appreciation for, individual uniqueness and diversity
  • Commitment to student development, leadership and teamwork
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for participants

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to get in and out of a canoe / kayak quickly in case assistance is needed by one of our participants.
  • Must be able to lift a canoe / kayak onto canoe racks with assistance.
  • Must be able to hike carrying a pack for up to 10 miles.
  • Must be physically fit to keep up with a group of 9-16 year olds on the trail or on the river
  • Must be able to belay participants age 9 to adults of various weight

Required Experience:

  • Participation in ROEA Trip Leader Training Program
  • First Aid and CPR certification required
  • Wilderness First Aid and/or Wilderness First Responder preferred

Education:

Must be at least a High School Graduate or posses GED equivalent. Additional education a plus.

Period of Employment:

Employment with this organization is of an “at will” nature, which means that the Employee may resign at any time and the Employer may discharge Employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation and hours:

Pay range $15 – $20 per hour (based on experience). Maximum 15-25 hours per week
